ABOUT AURORA:

Aurora (2016 population 55,445) is a town in central York Region in the Greater Toronto Area. It is located north of the Town of Richmond Hill and is partially situated on the Oak Ridges Moraine. Aurora has been ranked in the top 10 wealthiest towns in Canada.

Worthy of note is the fact that Aurora was the childhood home of Lester B. Pearson, Prime Minister of Canada from 1963 to 1968, when his father, Rev. Edwin Pearson, was the Methodist minister. Aurora is noted for preserving its history and in 2008 was awarded The Prince of Wales Prize for Municipal Heritage Leadership. In 2009 the town received the Lieutenant Governor’s Ontario Heritage Award for Community Leadership in heritage conservation and promotion.

 

EDUCATION:

Aurora is served by schools from three publicly funded school boards: the York Region District School Board, the York Catholic District School Board, and Conseil scolaire de district catholique Centre-Sud (the French-language Catholic Board). The Conseil scolaire Viamonde (the secular French-language board) also has Aurora in its territory.

The York Region District School Board operates two high schools in Aurora; Dr. G.W. Williams Secondary School & Aurora High School. The York Catholic District School Board operates two high schools in Aurora; Cardinal Carter Catholic High School & St. Maximillian Kolbe Catholic High School.

St. Andrew’s College, a private, independent school for boys, also operates in Aurora.

 

EVENTS & ATTRACTIONS:

Doors Open Aurora is a fun, popular community event that opens doors to places of architectural, cultural, historical, or natural significance once a year – for free! The event encourages community spirit, local tourism and economic development. The event stimulates the arts and culture community and encourages volunteerism.

The Aurora Chamber Street Festival is held annually on the first Sunday in June, rain or shine! The Festival is a fun-filled family event for all ages with over 500 vendors, fantastic street performers, live music, delicious food and so much more. Over 30,000 people attend each year to enjoy the sights, sounds, smells and shopping while discovering local businesses and community groups.

 

SPORTS & RECREATION:

Aurora is fortunate to have many indoor and outdoor facilities, offering a variety of sports, recreation programs and family-friendly special events. The main recreation facilities in town are the Aurora Family Leisure Complex (AFLC) and the Stronach Aurora Recreation Complex (SARC).

The Parks division of the Aurora Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services department currently manages over 62 parks encompassing more than 800 acres. Connecting many of the parks is a trail system of approximately 57 kilometers designed to accommodate joggers, hikers and skiers. It is anticipated that some of these trails will be connected with the developing regional trail system and others will be included as part of the emerging community bicycle path network.
